| Report from the Research Committee
August 2006
(Drs Bablis, Walker & Pollard)
Introduction
I feel privileged to report on a stellar year for the group. This year has seen us fly into new
territory with publications galore and new sources of funding for the group. The background work
of the previous years is now beginning to pay off in a big way. The good news...... there is much
more coming in the years ahead. At this time I wish to thank everybody for the team effort and
despite our absence from Eagles this year, we hope that we can be there in spirit
There has been a great deal of behind-the-scenes activity going on that will lead to more activity
later in the year and into next year. Although it is not greatly visible, it is very important
background work. We plan to be at the 2007 Eagles to share the results of this work with you.
World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC)
Whilst in Sydney Dr Scott had the pleasure of meeting Dr Dennis Richards, Chiropractors
Association of Australia President. He also holds the position of Vice President of the WFC.
Subsequent to Dr Richards attending the Basic / Next seminars, he arranged for Dr Scott to
present at WFC. I strongly encourage this action, as it will nicely support the research
proposals that we intend to submit to the WFC meeting in Portugal in 2007. We hope to present
all the RCT work.
FCER (Federation of Chiropractic Education and Research)
We were successful in having a paper on the proposed RCT of NET for ADHD children accepted
for a platform presentation for the meeting in Chicago in Sept this year. In addition,
Macquarie University Dept. Health & Chiropractic received 24 of the total 92 accepted
platform presentations. Of these 24, my students were successful in 18 of the 24. This is
mentioned as it will bring strong attention to the Dept and its research activities. The
profile of all the researchers and their projects will increase with the presentation
of our collective work.

Papers in Preparation
- The DRAM paper is currently midway through preparation. We await the follow-up
data for data entry and then the statistics will be performed. Following that time, we will
complete the paper.
The incidence of anxiety and depression presenting to an NET practitioner, the (DRAM) study
(part 1). Part 2 will re-evaluate subjects 3 months post treatment. This project is more than
half way complete. We currently await the post treatment data. Once entered into the statistical
program it will be analysed and a paper will be generated.

- The Trigger Point Paper
This paper is almost finished. We await a final statistical analysis from our statistician and
we will be able to finalize the write up and submit it.
- The Psychodermotology Paper
This has just begun and Dr. Rohan DeSouza has volunteered to assist with this work.
Research Projects Ethics Submissions
There have been no new ethics submissions. All research projects have already received ethics
approval. A few of them (LBP, ADHD) have had modifications to the original proposals and have
been modified accordingly.
Research Projects About to Commence
- Title: A retrospective analysis of new patients presenting to an established
NET practice. This project will establish the types of conditions treated by NET practitioners
or their scope of practice. It will be run in conjunction with the LBP RCT.
- Title: An investigation of treatment outcomes with NET: an outcomes
surveillance study. This project will establish all outcomes (good and bad mild and severe)
that follow from every treatment rendered to every patient in a single practice in a one-year
period. This information will provide real evidence that NET is NOT dangerous and will help
support practitioners in any medicolegal battle. It will be run in conjunction with the LBP RCT.
Post Graduate Research Students: now there are three!
There remains three research students (Drs Bablis, Brown & Karpouzis).
However Drs Bablis (RCT LBP) and Brown (RCT hypothyroidism), Have been successfully upgraded
to PhD status from their previous MSc status. Congratulations to all involved.
Conclusion
Our research effort continues to grow. We have been successful in attracting funding and funding
will shortly drive the multifaceted LBP RCT. Once complete that study will spawn a number of
research papers that will place a foundation under the technique of NET, as well as provide
strong impetus to get the technique into the colleges. The collective effort is large,
coordinated and productive. Thank you to all you have contributed and on behalf of the Board,
I look forward to many exciting developments in the not too distant future.
