Why is the ONE Research Foundation sponsoring this Essay Competition?
We feel that the
Biopsychosocial Model (BPSM) and the identity of
Chiropractic is an important topic for discussion and consideration in Chiropractic,
especially given the fact that the future of Chiropractic is literally launched from
those lecture halls. There are many changes happening including the increased pace
of the evolution of treatment models both within and outside of Chiropractic, and
the large scale movement of patients seeking more effective and comprehensive healthcare.
The Biopsychosocial model has been identified as an important element of the identity of Chiropractic agreed by WFC members as set forth in the
World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC’s)
“Unanimous agreement on the Identity of the Profession” from the 8th Biennial Congress in 2005.
The ONE Research Foundation has a mission to explore, through
research, the
Biopsychosocial Model (BPSM) and specifically the treatment
modality- Neuro-Emotional Technique.
Our goal in sponsoring this competition is to support the opportunity
for a larger debate of whether it is important for Chiropractic Academia to support the BPSM
as an effective direction for the field to move in the future and, whatever the opinions
expressed, can they be supported by existing research. This is the reason the question is
entitled “Should…” instead of “Why should.”
We hope that you will join us by contributing your researches and
knowledge to this discourse by submitting an essay to the competition, no matter
which opinion you hold.
To create as unbiased an environment as possible, we will be employing
blind judging. That is, all entries received by the judges will have no identifying
information on them regarding either the author’s identity or institutional affiliation.
All of the Content Judges have been chosen from Chiropractic Academia and
have extensive academic histories and accomplishments. We have secured what we feel is a
group of judges that is representative in its diversity of philosophy, research, basic
science, and clinical faculty as well as administrators; its institutional affiliations;
and even its mix of international institutions. We also have one judge who is a professor
of written communication at the University of Southern California, who will be judging the
essays exclusively on structure, form, and the conformity of the essay to the Vancouver Style.
We should add that none of these judges are members of the ONE Research Foundation.
We hope you will enjoy being part of both the essay process as well as the
larger conversation on this topic within the field of Chiropractic.
